Matthew Zerden, MD, MPH, is a board-certified OBGYN and board-certified Complex Family Planning subspecialist in North Carolina and Virginia. He currently works as the Medical Director of His Choice Health Durham Chapel Hill and as the Associate Medical Director of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (PPSAT). His academic appointments include Clinical Assistant Professor of OBGYN at the UNC School of Medicine and Consulting Associate in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Duke School of Medicine.
Dr. Zerden received both his medical degree and his Master’s Degree in Public Health from Harvard University. He completed his OBGYN residency and Family Planning fellowship at the UNC School of Medicine. Dr. Zerden has been a principal investigator on studies of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in the postpartum period, including several studies on immediate postpartum (IPP) LARC; Reproductive-life planning among Latinas; and educating patients and allowing them to choose from the various methods of surgical sterilization.
Dr. Zerden is engaged in reproductive health advocacy and policy at both the state and national level. He was involved in the successful effort to expand Medicaid funding to include IPP LARC in North Carolina and led efforts to implement IPP LARC programs in hospitals throughout North Carolina and in six other states.
