MNPQC’s Waypoint Award Artist

Jay Garcia

My name is Jairely, although I prefer to be called Jay. I am the mother of four children and of one beautiful daughter, Luna, who watches over us from heaven. Two of my children are autistic, and our family’s journey has also included evaluations related to autism for my other two children.

In 2024, I experienced a very complicated twin pregnancy in which only one of my daughters survived. The delivery was extremely difficult and left me with significant trauma and postpartum depression. I also faced numerous medical complications that caused overwhelming exhaustion and, at times, made me feel that I wanted to stop everything and simply rest forever.

Through the mental health care system, I discovered a way to express through art everything that I carried in my mind and in my heart. I began painting in 2025, and it became the best way to understand what I was feeling and what I needed in order to heal.

Working together with my therapist and my psychiatrist, I have learned healthy ways to process my post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression in the face of the many challenges that motherhood—and life itself—can bring. Whether directly or symbolically, I now express on canvas everything that is difficult for me to put into words.

Discovering art, together with the unwavering support of every therapist and mental health professional who has walked beside me, truly saved my life and the life of my family.
