Black Maternal Health Week Event

Join Kiwi Cares for a panel honoring Black Maternal Health Week, bringing together key stakeholders to hear Minnesotan birthing people’s experiences and respond to them. This panel will explore the state of maternal health and access in Minnesota, what progress has been made since Minnesota passed the Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act in 2021, why there is still pregnancy loss and what Minnesotans can do to improve outcomes in the state.

The panel, moderated by MPR host Angela Davis, will feature Rachel Hardeman, PhD MPH; Nathan Chomilo, MD; and one of the co-editors of What God is Honored Here: Writings on Miscarriage and Infant Loss by and for Women of Color, Shannon Gibney. Books will be available to purchase and signing with Gibney following the panel.

In addition to honoring Black Maternal Health week, the event will launch The Bond: Our Babies, Our Voices. This limited-series podcast shares the stories of Black, Native and Latina women in Minnesota. The podcast explores how these women worked to have optimal birth outcomes but met challenges within the healthcare setting. The podcast will be available on Apple, Spotify and where else you get your podcasts.
